8th October 2008

Dear Parents,

We have had a really good start to the term and the children from our school have had some wonderful learning experiences as you can read in the list below.

  • Bell Boats on the Bridgwater Canal for year fours

  • Whole school day on the Ilton Base

  • Hot school meals have been received well and the children say that they are ‘tasty’

  • Clarinet lessons for the older children

  • Younger children have visited Barrington Court

  • Older children visited Barrington Court for ‘Plot to Plate’

  • Continuation of the art project at Barrington Court with Kate Lynch our ‘resident’ artist.  This was for the older children

  • Variety of clubs on both bases

  • Older children have been learning French

  • Harvest Festival

Coming up we have the PE festivals for Key Stage one and an after school festival for key stage two.  In addition we are working with Tesco who are supporting the children in planting vegetables and fruit in a scheme called ‘Plough to Plate’.

However, I assure you that the children are working hard on learning the basic skills in the classroom and a lot of our children have already made really good progress.

Behind the scenes the staff are working hard and have been attending lots of training and meetings to enable us to continue to raise our standards within our school.

New Building on Barrington Base

The new Elliott building is now on the Barrington Base.  It has not yet been handed over to us as there is still some work going on but hopefully we will soon be able to use it with the children.  There will be an ‘official opening’ in November and details will be sent nearer the time.

Harvest Festival

Thank you for attending our Harvest Festival in St. Peter’s Church.  The children so enjoy going to church and at the end I heard them asking if they could do it again! They waited eagerly for you to turn up and I am really pleased so many of you could attend.  The school raised £142.50 for the school in Kenya . This money will go a long way.

Kathakali Theatre Company

The world famous Kala Chethena Kathakali Theatre Company from Southern India will be performing at Swanmead on Wednesday 26th November (7.00 -9.00p.m) and Thursday 27th November (6.00-8.00p.m) these performances are open to all children and families.  Details for tickets are on a poster in school.

School Term

A reminder that half term is Monday 27th October until Monday 3rd November.  The 3rd November is an inset day for staff training.  The children return to school on 4th November.

School Meals

PLEASE could you ensure that your order is sent into school with the correct money in a sealed envelope with your child/ren’s name/s on the front and the amount enclosed by Wednesday morning at the latest. This will make it easier for the staff from SCS to do the order. If your child is unable to attend school and you wish to cancel their meal, please telephone Swanmead kitchen on 01460 55249 before 9.00 am. You will not be charged if you do this.

Consultation

Thank you to those of you who have filled in and returned your consultation form.  If you think it is important to keep the school in the village and provide a good standard of education for your children and future children please support our consultation.  This does not affect your own family decision of when the children leave our school or where they go but does give families, particularly those in the future, of having more options.  It will also attract more families to our school. Please return the forms as soon as possible.  If you would like to talk further about the consultation please come and talk to myself or ask to talk to a school governor.
