Letter from the Chair of Governors
Dear ParentsThe Governing Body are pleased to forward their report for the last School year to you and to invite all parents to meet them if they would like to discuss any points between 7 and 7.3Opm at the Barrington Base before the Governing Body meeting at 7.3Opm on Wednesday, 24th November.
We report on a quieter year of success and consolidation after the previous year of OFSTED inspection. After the staff changes at the end of 02/03 and the loss of Mrs. Toms just over a year ago, we are pleased to move into the new year with an unchanged team.
The Governing Body has appreciated the efforts of all the Staff and the support of the Parents and look forward to another good year in 04/05.
Yours sincerely
David Watson
Chairman of the Governing Body Back to top
Message from the Headteacher
Dear ParentsThe Annual Report to Parents Evening provides us with the opportunity to look back on the previous school year, to celebrate our successes and to focus on improvements in the corning year.
I beleve that following on from our very positive OFSTED inspection in March 2003 we built on that achievement and carried on working hard to provide all of our children with the very best education possible. I think that this is one reason why our school is so successful. The staff is never satisfied and continually strives to do better. This means that we have very high expectations of the children and the children, in turn, are encouraged to give of their best at all times.
You will see from the report that we offer many activities which enrich the lives of the children and open their eyes to the world around them. Our teaching is based on Christian principles and we hope that children will grow up to be thoughtful and caring individuals who always consider the needs of others.
I do hope that you will able to be present on November 24th at 7:00pm on the Barrington base to discuss the report. If you cannot attend but have points you wish to raise, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours sincerely,
P.A.Ferguson

Introduction
An Education Act passed in 1986 requires school governors to present a report on the school to parents for consideration at a meeting of parents registered at the school. This year the meeting will be on Wednesday 24th November, 2004, between 7.00 and 7.3Opm at the Barrington base.If there are 20% of parents present, after discussion, a resolution may be proposed on matters arising from the report and, if passed by a simple majority, can be presented to the Governing body, the Head teacher or Local Education Authority (Somerset County Council).
The prospectus of the school contains useful information for parents.
St. Mary and St. Peter's CE First School operates on two bases, Barrington and Ilton. It is a co-educational day school for pupils aged 4+ to 9+. It is a voluntary controlled school which means that the Church of England is represented on the governing body. The number on roll at the end of the summer term, 2004, was 66. Back to top

Mrs. Toms left the Ilton base in October 2003 after many years working there as a SEN/Learning Support Assistant. Mrs. S.Bell was appointed to replace Mrs. Toms. Mrs. T.Paul was appointed to work with one child on the Ilton base Back to topCurriculum Development
During the Autumn term staff focused on updating history and geography policies and schemes of work. Planning sheets for Collective Worship were introduced. Provision for SEN was updated.During the Spring term we focused on literacy and numeracy and assessing the impact of the strategies. Staff were keen to improve handwriting, spelling and performance maths amongst children. We also reviewed the new DfES strategy on Speaking and Listening.
During the Summer term we continued the focus on literacy and numeracy and considered ways to improve performance at KS1 SATs. Back to top
Special Educational Needs report
Our aim is to provide a challenging and rewarding education for all children. The way in which children reach the goals we set are different as, at various times, some children may require additional help from staff for educational or behavioural reasons. This may be a short term or long term issue but parents are kept informed throughout. We aim to identify children requiring additional support as early as possible and put into place measures to help the child. This could be in class support or small group work. The help and support of parents is vital for the child to make the necessary progress and meetings are held to discuss issues with parents.
Last year we had nine children on the SEN Register (six on basic entitlement, two on school action and one on school action plus) and four children on the Able Children Register.
If anyone has any concerns about Special Educational Needs please speak to Miss Marshall on the Ilton base. Back to top
